Algeria / Removal of 1.800 long-standing containers from the Port of Algiers as part of “cleansing” operation.

In line with firm guidelines issued on August 2nd 2008 by the Algerian government, the authorities of the port of Algiers have engaged in a phased-out “cleansing” operation of the harbour area by removing a first batch of 1.800 lingering containers there.

  • The operation is expected to continue in the next few weeks and will involve the removal from the port of more containers which contain obsolete and outdated products notably foodstuffs and staple commodities.
  •
  • These products which are to be eliminated as they pose a serious threat to human health notably to the dock-workers are estimated to cost over 8 billion Dinars.
  •
  • The relevant products were imported and filled in these aging containers in early 2008.
  •
  • The ongoing “cleansing” operation is being conducted by the port Management in close conjunction with the border police and the customs’ services of the port of Algiers.
